A few is used with countable nouns to show a small quantity.

A few تستخدم مع الاسماء المعدودة و ذلك لتبين لنا الكميات القليلة

It is used in affirmative statements, and Never used in negatives

تستخدم A few في حالة التصريحات المؤكدة ( أي في الجمل المثبتة ) . و لا تستخدم ابداً في حالة النفي

For example:

- I have a few books.

- I don't have a few books ( This is incorrect ) .

- I don't have any books . ( This is correct. )

In questions : We generally use any in questions.

في السؤال : و نستخدم بشكل عام نستخدم any في حالة السؤال

-Do you have a few books?

Sometimes this is possible, but generally speaking we use any for questions,

من المحتمل وجود A few في السؤال و لكننا نستخدم any بشكل عام في سؤالنا اثناء الحديث

Few

There is an important difference between a few and few. Few without a is used to mean we don't have enough of something.

يوجد الكثير من الفروق الهامة بين A few و fewحيث ان :

Few بدون ان تكون مسبقة بــ a تستخدم لنعنى بها انة ليس لدينا الشيء الكافي

For example:

- She has few apples in the refrigerator. (She doesn't have enough apples).

لديها القليل من التفاح في الثلاجة . ( و نقصد بالجملة انه ليس لديها تفاح يكفى )

- She has a few apples in the refrigerator. (She has a small quantity of apples)

لديها القليل من التفاح في الثلاجة ( و نقصد بالجملة انه لديها كمية قليلة من التفاح )

Put another way, "a few" means "a small quantity", but "few" means "not a big quantity

و لكن من ناحية اخرى :

"a few" تعنى كمية قليلة و لكن "few" تعنى كمية ليست كبيرة

For example:

- A few friends came to my party. ( This is a positive idea, I'm happy a few people came. )

قليل من الاصدقاء جاءو الى حفلتي ( و هذة فكرة ايجابية فانا سعيد لان القليل من الاصدقاء جائو الى الحفلة )

- Few friends came to my party. This is a negative idea, I'm not happy because not many people came.

قليل من الاصدقاء جائو الى حفلتي ( و هذه فكرة سلبية فهنا انا لست سعيدا لانة لم ياتي اشخاص كثيرون الى حفلتي )

Notice :

how "a few" focuses on how many people did come, but "few" focuses on how many didn't come

Meaning

القليل + اسم لايجمع

A few and a little is used to mean a small quantity or a small number.

كلاهما يعنيان كمية قليلة أو رقم صغير

I have a few friends. (a small number)

لدي القليل من الأصدقاء (عدد صغير)

I have a little money. (a small amount)

لدي القليل من المال. كمية قليلة

Few and little is used to mean "not enough", or to give the small quantity/number a negative meaning.

يعبران عن توفر كمية قليلة بمعنى منفي

I have few friends. (a small number, and I wish I had more)

 لدي القليل من الأصدقاء وأرجوا أن يكون لدي أكثر

I have little money. (a small amount, and I wish I had more)

Few and little without "a" are quite formal. In spoken English it is more common to say "only a few/little" or "not much/many".

إذا تم استخدامها بدون (a) فتكونان رسميتان

Few people came to the meeting (more formal)

Only a few people came to the meeting (less formal)

مع (a) تعتبران أقل رسمية

If we use a few or a little before a pronoun or determiner, we use of.
