شرح استخدام الفرق بين used to و would
استخدام used to
* ملاحظة / نستخدم ( used to ) للتحدث عن مواقف أو حالات ( actions or states) حدثت في الماضي ولم نعد نفعلها أو لم تعد تحدث.
وهي إحداث أو مواقف استمرت لبعض الوقت ولم تحصل بشكل مفاجئ أو لمجرد لحظة.
Ex / I used to live in Baghdad , but I moved to Kut last year.
Ex / We used to go mushroom - picking in Autumn.
Ex/ Rana used to be very shy.
Ex / Helen used to hate her job until she got a promotion.
* ملاحظة / يأتي بعد ( used to ) مصدر مجرد.
* ملاحظة / نستخدم ( used to ) مع هذه الأنواع من الأفعال :-
1- أفعال الحواس : see , smell , taste , hear , feel , look
2- أفعال الادراك أو العقل : believe , think , realize , suppose , understand , know , remember ,
imagine , admit , agree , accept ,
3- أفعال العاطفة : adore , love , like , dislike , hate , care , hope
4- أفعال التملك و الكينونة : have , own , possess , belong , be
5- أفعال اخرى مثل : live , need , contain
Ex / She used to taste the food before serving.
Ex / Karrar used to imagine how to be a famous player.
Ex / I used to hate physics lessons.
Ex / Zainab used to be very shy.
Ex / Reem and Rawnaq used to be best friends , but then they had an argument.
Ex / My uncle used to live in Paris.
Ex / We used to have a farm when we were in the countryside.
* ملاحظة / لا نستخدم ( used to ) في جملة تحتوي على ( and , when , while ) :-
Ex / When he was twelve , he used to go swimming in the river.
Ex / My family used to live in a small flat and in 1990 we bought a big house.
Ex / I used to fall asleep while doing my homework.
Ex / My grandma used to take care of me while my mum was out.
* ملاحظة / لا نستخدم ( used to ) مع كلمة) ( for التي تأتي بعدها فترة زمنية .
* ملاحظة / لنفي ( used to ) نستخدم ( didn’t use to ) حيث نستخدمها للتعبير عن اشياء لم نكن نفعلها سابقا ولكننا الان نفعلها.
Ex / I didn’t use to like fish , but now I love it.
Ex / She didn’t use to enjoy poetry , but now she does.
** لاحظ اننا نحذف الحرف ( d ) من ( use to) في حالتي النفي والاستفهام.
Ex / Did you use to go out at night?
Ex / Did she use to have long hair?
استخدام would
* نستخدم ( would ) للتعبير عن احداث كانت تتكرر مرات ومرات في الزمن الماضي ولم تعد تحدث الان . ( repeated or regular actions)
* ملاحظات :-
1- يأتي بعد ( would ) مصدر مجرد.
2- نستخدم ( would ) مع ظروف التكرار ( very , always , often , usually ) .
3- نستخدم ( would ) مع كلمة ( for ) التي تأتي بعدها فترة زمنية غير محددة for long periods , for hours , for days
4- لآ نستخدم ( would ) مع كلمة ( for ) اذا جاء بعدها ( رقم ) يحدد طول الفترة الزمنية للحدث مثل :
for three hours , for ten days , for two weeks , for 5 years
5- لا نستخدم ( would ) مع ظروف الزمن الماضية ( last , ago , yesterday) أو ( رقم سنة ماضية ) لانها تحدد فترة انتهاء الحدث.
6- لنفي ( would ) نضع بعدها ( not ) ، أما في حالة الاستفهام نقدمها على الفاعل.
Ex / Sajjad would stay up to watch football matches.
Ex / Every time they visited us , their children would make noise.
Ex / The pilot would fly for long periods.
Ex / I would walk in the rain every time it rained.
Ex/ Sarah would surf the internet for hours.
الصيغ التي يمكن أن تأتي بها ( would / used to ) في الامتحان
1- When Ahmed was ten , he ( used to / would ) live near the coast.
2- At weekends we --------- go fishing in a lake near our house.
( a- would b- used to c- both are possible )
3- I ---------- hate English lessons. ( a- would b- used to c- both are possible )
4- Our national football team won Asian Cup in 2007.
( Rewrite this sentence with “ would “ if possible. If not , say why )
Not possible because “ would “ is used for repeated actions , not for single actions.
5- Luma worked for hours. ( Rewrite this sentence with “ used to “ if possible. If not , say why )
Not possible because “ used to“ is not used for how long an action or a state lasted.
6- Zahra`a watched TV for two hours. ( Use “ would “ when it is possible )
Not possible.
7- I visited Moscow last year. ( Rewrite with “ would “ when it is possible )
Not possible.
8- I always went by bus. ( Use “ would “ if possible )
I would always go by bus.
9- Susan took the train to work , but now she drives. ( Rewrite with “ used to “ when it is possible )
Susan used to take the train to work , but now she drives.
10- A question with “ used to “ [ when / he / go to bed ]

11- A question with “ would “ [ where / she / spend every weekend ]
Where would she spend every weekend?
